Studies presented at the recent Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association showed the beneficial effect of yoga on reducing the symptoms of depression. Although yoga has gained popularity in the West, research data showing its effect on mental health issues has lagged.
Yoga for Stress Relief and Relaxation
Symptoms of depression were significantly decreased for participants engaging in both Hatha yoga and Bikram yoga compared with controlled groups. Another study looked at comparing participation in yoga to relaxation techniques. Although initial results indicated relaxation and yoga were equally effective at reducing depression symptoms, a two-month follow-up revealed that yoga participants had “significantly lower scores for depression, anxiety and stress than the relaxation group.”
The studies “suggest that yoga-based interventions have promise for depressed mood and that they are feasible for patients with chronic, treatment-resistant depression.”
